Mutual Machine Translation

 Vision

The need of examiners and the general public to access prior art in foreign languages is increasing. Similarly, there is a need to share search and examination information among offices because access to this information helps not only to avoid the duplication of work but also to enhance the quality of examination and global dissemination of patent information.

Consequently, there is an urgent need for the language barriers that exist between users with different languages including examiners of Intellectual Property (IP) offices to be eliminated as quickly and efficiently as possible, because language barriers limit the extent to which IP offices and the general public can understand and utilize documents and information, To this end, the EPO, JPO, SIPO and KIPO have all put in much effort into providing their customers with high quality machine translation services.

Despite relentless individual efforts by each office at improving the machine translation services, the services still continue to be in need of improvement especially when compared with human translations.

For this reason, this project aims to improve the quality of the machine translation services and to facilitate the free flow and exchange of prior art documents, search and examination information, by utilizing the collective knowledge and know-how of the IP5 offices in various cooperation activities.

Contribution to Work Sharing

This project will contribute to improving the quality of machine translation services for prior art documents and for the search and examination information offered by the IP5 offices. This will in turn increase the level of trust and confidence in the machine-translated information of each offices.

Regarding searches, this project will help each office to better understand the prior art documents of other offices and to use them as citations.

In examination activities, the IP5 offices will also benefit from a clearer comprehension ,and thus a better use, of the search and examination information of other offices.
